Alexandru Salceanu
Alexandru Salceanu is an interdisciplinary artist.
His artistic concerns revolve around micro and macro tensions: between power and vulnerability; fear and resilience; cultural identity and the homogeneity of globalism. Juxtaposing the dissonance of political and economic theory and the intimacy of lived experience, he layers historical facts, aesthetic references, and personal accounts together through a variety of media—painting, photography, video, projection mapping, and social practice. Through his work, he seeks art’s transformative power to humanize issues, challenge perspectives and encourage a more personal encounter. He created several documentaries and photo essays in his native country, Romania, and the Philippines. After returning to the US, he received his MFA degree from Mills College. He is currently working on a visual and oral history repository of the immigrant experience, Witness Collaborative, along with a number of other projects. Alexandru is also father to an amazing little girl.
