We support the Makahiki Ohana Day project, which addresses the need to document the last remaining lawai‘a that holds the traditional ecological knowledge of the akule fishing traditions of their village in a way that captures the ‘ike (knowledge) of the elders to help restore the marine ecosystems. The marine life in Kealakekua Bay in South Kona is negatively impacted by tourism and the State government’s management plan lack traditional knowledge and support for cultural lifestyles. Community members including youth will be trained in media skills to document the elders who will share their knowledge including the spiritual and lineal connections to this ecosystem which can be applied within the government’s management plan and will be shared with other communities near and far.
