ORGANIC AND NATIVE FARMING INTERSECTIONS

From 2021-2022 Slow Food USA and Slow Food Turtle Island Association (SFTIA) worked together on a grant to explore the intersection of the worlds of Native farming/Indigenous Agriculture and Organic Farming. TCC is honored to be part of the SFTIA circle, also with connections to organic farming through our partner growing site at the Indian Valley Organic Farm and Garden in Novato, CA. We were interested in this conversation as well through our collaborative work there – as well as future considerations as we deepen our work on our Heron Shadow land project – we were happy to jump in on the project.

The goal was to complete a series of interviews with more than a dozen Native growers, farmers, producers and land tenders to research what the current state of “organic certification” is in relation to Native/Indigenous farming and agriculture today, if any.  From those interviews and research, we drafted a summary report (hyperlink to PDF of final report) to share the dialogue on the intersection of organic certification and Native farming that could be used for a toolkit or other community resources for those that might be interested in exploring the connections of these systems of knowledge.
